CIE International Symposium on Road Surface Photometric Characteristics:

Measurement Systems and Results

9-10 July 2008, Turin, Italy

This two-day Symposium will be a great opportunity  to discuss the importance of road  surface photometric  characteristics in  nowadays lighting engineering and to evaluate the state of the art and future  trends of  instrumentation of  its characterization.

This symposium is open to lighting engineers and designers, researchers on materials characterization, road and lighting plant managers,road authorities and everyone else interested  in road lighting characteristic of characterization.

The  need  to increase  the  photometric performances of road lighting systems considering environmental  and energetic aspects has become a matter of  primary importance in many countries:road  lighting  represents a large amount of  the electricity consumption of  a nation. Moreover, the importance of considering correct photometric data, of luminaires as well as of road surfaces, has also become an international focus.

To save energy  while  visual  performances increase requires a detailed physical modeling of the lighted environment  and  of  the human vision properties:  in  this  process  the photometric characteristics of the road surface play a key role.

The workshop’s main goals are:
- To provide a detailed and update description of  the existing measurement systems and their acquisition methodologies;
-  To face  the new research on  measurement methodologies and systems;
-  To discuss  about  relevant  measurement problems;
-   To give to research and lighting engineers the possibility to  compare  different   technical solutions    both   for  in  situ  and   in  laboratory characterizations;
-   To gather the recent data of current materials and evaluate their impact on the road lighting performances;
-   To help lignhting designers on the evaluation of road surface characteristics and on their importance in the plant design.

The outcome of the workshop could be utilized for future works in Division 4,specially,for the work of the CIE Reporterships R4-30" Measuring Systems for In-Situ  Road Characteristics" and R4-32 "Reflection Properties of Road Surfaces".

This symposium will involve intemational experts on the field with contributed papers.Papers should deal with one of the following subjects:

Day1-Measurement Methods and Systems in Lab and in the Field
- Measuremengts systems;
- Measurements methodologies;
- Uncertainty evaluation;
- In-situ and in lab characherization;
- Relevant measurement problems.

Day 2- Road Surface Photometric Charateristics and Applications

- The use of photometric road properties in light projects;
-The impact of using standard VS. measured road r-tables, on the assessment of photometric and energetic performances of lighting installation;
-The recent data of material currently in use of  road;
-The need to update the international standards used in the process of the lighting design;
-Other applications dealing with the lighting characteristics of the road surfaces
