Nigeria Quality Control Department Set Standard's for Fish Sellers
The Quality Control Department of the FCTA came out with a framework to control and check the activities of fish and frozen foods sellers at Kado Fish Market.
A Senior Officer of the department, Mr. Dabit J Sabo said plans are underway to curtail any outbreak of contaminated foods, adding that proper and routine supervision would be maintained so as to protect fish consumers.
He explained that there is the need for quality control on fishes because of a bacteria associated with fish poisoning that is very dangerous and deadly for humans.
Sabo also blamed power outage as a major problem facing traders in the area.
He maintained that quality control is very crucial in fish business and also requires routine check because there are organisms that are microscopic in which the bacteria involved in fish spoilage cannot be seen with the naked eyes. "We are doing our work to maintain quality, the odour from a spoilt fish is harmful and offensive which is as a result of bacteria and we also charge the sellers to maintain good preservation.
The senior officer, however, said that major sellers in the market, coupled with the small traders have improvised an alternative to the erratic power supply by purchasing generating sets to further improve on their business to avoid the losses they suffered due to power outage.
"Because most of them use generators, the cost of operation and preservation has caused invariably impact on the prices of fish, stressing that officers are assigned to shops to ascertain that the metre gauge of the cool room is in proper shape. He said.
